Damian Evans reports on the 050 Latin Championship at the Blackpool Dance Festival

Wednesday night was another electric night in the Empress Ballroom with such varied championships as the Formation, the Amateur Ballroom and the Over 50s….. with all competitors dancing their hearts out on that famous floor ! The Over 50s Championships is a specific age category that allows those that have started dance later or had a break in their career to compete with their peers by age …  tonight was no exception and starting with over 35 couples and 4 rounds which culminated in an exciting final.

Into first place and retaining their Championship title from 2022 was no 17 Petri and Ulla Jarvinen, (3,1,1,1) from the first round they had a mission on hand to keep that trophy from those behind them… they danced a super final with confidence and conviction. They are very experienced competitors and that showed through the rounds with a well rehearsed consistent performance that was very co ordinated and contained, with enough drama and charisma producing clear readable dancing to clinch the title. Congratulations on a well deserved win !

Into 2nd place and moving up a position from 2022 was no 9 Takeshi Matsumoto and Tomoyo Miyanishi (2,3,3,2) who were in a closely fought battle with the third place couple. They are a good couple with a lot of personality, they are very aware of their surroundings and always allow themselves enough space to dance to their potential. Again this couple is experienced at dancing at a high level and they produced a very well rehearsed performance which was very together and matched or complementary in their arm movements and body action. I would like to see a more contained energy from them to enable them to challenge for the top spot more. Well done to you both !

Into 3rd place was a new couple on the scene for me, no 21 Juanito Mahinay Jr and Nora Ravelo ( 1,2,4,4 ) bursting into the final with a fabulous result and winning the Cha cha… what an entry ! A small power packed couple that definitely caught the eye with their super rhythm and charisma. They are full of energy and love of dance, very well matched in their choreography and well rehearsed. They now need to strive for more consistency across the board to produce a more readable performance throughout the competition.  A very exciting addition to the Senior ranks, Congratulations to you both !

Into 4th place was no 18 Jaewong Wang and Jungha Sun,(4,4,2,3) another couple I have not seen before in this competition. A very well presented couple that had a great night producing a rhythmical performance from the first round. They danced a super Paso Doble that can be seen in their final placing. Very readable figures with clear shapings and relationship to the music. This is definitely their strongest dance, but they now need to work on those hip actions and body tick to challenge more in the rhythm dances.. Congratulations and well done !

Into 5th place was no 27, Achim Hobl and Kerstin Hahn, (5,5,5,5) they must be slightly dissappointed with this result as it’s the same placing as 2022 with two higher placed couples not dancing from last year. I personally thought that they fought from the first round for a much higher position, they were charismatic, clear and showed a determination to their performance. Their dancing is very well rehearsed and clear with good leg and foot actions. Their performance level needs to be more consistent as sometimes can get a little introverted and unfortunately the final was not their best round. Congratulations to you both and keep working hard the rewards will come soon enough !

And lastly into 6th place was no 26, Flavio Lodigiani and Patricia Patt, a tall elegant couple that have a presence and sophistication about them that catches the eye. A little understated but very well presented with a good sense of performance and drama that afforded them a final placing. They produce great lines and have a good extension to their dancing. They now need to work on their rhythms and movement across the floor as sometimes they can look static. A couple I considered for the final from the first round so well done to you both !
